This is just a quick tip for those, who are getting tired of thumbnail previews of open websites in new Opera 10.50 on Windows 7 taskbar. I'd say this really isn't good feature to have turned on by default. Can get very annoying very quickly.

Whole procedure is very simple and will take just a minute:

Open Opera Preferences Editor by typing “opera:config” (1) into address bar and pressing [ENTER] on your keyboard.

Search for “taskbar” (2) and uncheck “Use Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails” (3).

Press Save button (4) and restart Opera (5).

Turn off Windows 7 taskbar thumbnails in Opera 10.50

That’s really it! Simple, easy and working well. See you next time!

Just a quick tip for anybody who uses Windows 7 N or KN version (anybody out there except me?) and want to watch digital TV with program ProgDVB.

When I was buying sweet brand new Windows 7, surely I wanted the best price. The lowest one I’ve found on British web of Microsoft. To my surprise there was more to choose from than just “upgrade or full”. For the first time I’ve seen Windows of version N, although after finding out what this is about, it became more familiar to me. Windows 7 N does not contain Windows Media player. Holy Grail for me!

I’ve ordered the operating system and we lived together happily until yesterday. Before I had no problem with playback of any media file using my beloved Windows Media Player alternatives. Curiosity tempted me to try also digital TV on my computer using free ProgDVB. But no matter how hard I tried, when I wanted to run the program, the error of “can’t find MFPLAT.DLL, please try to reinstall the application” appeared. After clicking the error off, the ProgDVB started but unfortunately with no channels in the list despite of correct devices settings. This was happening both for 32bit and 64bit ProgDVB and reinstallation surely didn’t help.

With question for help I’ve turned to trusted Google which answered “the mfplat.dll is a Media Foundation Platform DLL“. There we are! I bet everything is related to my relief of my Windows. I was unfortunately forced to download and install Windows update KB968211 – Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N and Windows 7 KN. So, everything I originally didn’t need, was added back to my Windows 7.

Positive thing: the problem with ProgDVB is gone now and I am able to watch some functioning TV programs. Is it that amazing and worth of additional Windows ballast? No…

Hope there are not many of you who bought computer with Windows Vista after 26th June 2009 in hope to upgrade to Windows 7 for free as promised by Microsoft and computer manufacturers...

Those unfortunate ones who have done it and now trying to upgrade to Windows 7 are probably unpleasantly surprised by the process, time of delivery of your new system and, of course, the charge. Although if you are lucky and found Microsoft Offer Form packed with your computer, you have actually no problem. Microsoft will take care about everything free of charge.

It looks like computer manufacturers make the upgrade process more difficult. They employ 3rd party company that takes care about registration and resending Windows 7 upgrade DVDs. You will have to pay for this service from €15 to €30 depending on a brand of computer you have bought. This charge will apply for OEM versions of Windows pre-installed on your computer already, those of you upgrading from box version will be charged less than half the price.

You might say the charge is not that hight, so OK, I’ll pay it and enjoy Windows 7. Well, depends on what you consider a high price and probably also the country you are living in, but for sure that is high price for promise of free process! I myself as a customer would feel cheated, pissed off and the brands involved would have a minus point in my mind for the future.

I am not a fan of upgrades of any kind – especially when it comes to Windows operating systems – and am glad I haven’t bought a computer at the time and adviced everybody not to do so. Just be careful for the future people and better wait until new system comes out!
