Windows 7N/KN and digital TV

Just a quick tip for anybody who uses Windows 7 N or KN version (anybody out there except me?) and want to watch digital TV with program ProgDVB.

When I was buying sweet brand new Windows 7, surely I wanted the best price. The lowest one I’ve found on British web of Microsoft. To my surprise there was more to choose from than just “upgrade or full”. For the first time I’ve seen Windows of version N, although after finding out what this is about, it became more familiar to me. Windows 7 N does not contain Windows Media player. Holy Grail for me!

I’ve ordered the operating system and we lived together happily until yesterday. Before I had no problem with playback of any media file using my beloved Windows Media Player alternatives. Curiosity tempted me to try also digital TV on my computer using free ProgDVB. But no matter how hard I tried, when I wanted to run the program, the error of “can’t find MFPLAT.DLL, please try to reinstall the application” appeared. After clicking the error off, the ProgDVB started but unfortunately with no channels in the list despite of correct devices settings. This was happening both for 32bit and 64bit ProgDVB and reinstallation surely didn’t help.

With question for help I’ve turned to trusted Google which answered “the mfplat.dll is a Media Foundation Platform DLL“. There we are! I bet everything is related to my relief of my Windows. I was unfortunately forced to download and install Windows update KB968211Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N and Windows 7 KN. So, everything I originally didn’t need, was added back to my Windows 7.

Positive thing: the problem with ProgDVB is gone now and I am able to watch some functioning TV programs. Is it that amazing and worth of additional Windows ballast? No…
